Hine Pirret Tuwharetoa and Kahungunu Hastings I love studying these portraits to gain knowledge of our old people. I too have an ancestor painted by Lindauer whose portrait is not in this collection. His name was 'Matuaahu' and he was the son of 'Te Wharerangi' about whom the haka, Ka mate,ka mate was composed by Te Rauparaha. This portrait hangs in the wharepuni at Otukou marae at the foot of Mount Tongariro just out of Turangi. Matuaahu was my great-great-great grandfather and was exiled to the Maniapoto after his father Te Wharerangi was murdered by another Tuwharetoa sub-tribe believing Te Wharerangi had willingly hidden the very blood guilty Te Rauparaha, who had fled into a kumara pit when he was being pursued by his enemies because he had killed some of their tribesmen while on a continuing war and raiding excursion of the North Island. There should be another exhibition of the unseen Lindauer portraits for the public

Chris Kemp Bodmin, Cornwall Such sad faces, not the way I remember my many, many visits to New Zealand. However I have brought many items of your culture home with me, which is why I am visiting your web site. Very good by the way. Regards Chris Kemp
