Oketopa oct 23. 1901.  Nikora Tautau Rapai  Waikato  This is the first time I have seen portraits this good. Those I know are exactly like they were in person
Oct 24 1901  Wiremu Tuapokai Hiuhi  Kakepuku  It was on this day that I got to view these portraits and I was so happy to see the portraits of Rewi Maniapoto and Wahanui
Oct. 26. 1901  Hare Maihi  Whangarei   I was amazed to see these portraits. I was overwhelmed with affection toward those of them who are now at eternal rest. Farewell to you all.
Nov 14, 1901  Te Wherowhero   Te Kuiti  We are most delighted with these portraits of our elders that we have seen here. Great is our affection for our elders. Farewell to you our forefathers and fathers.
    " " "  Tarati Te Wherowhero
23 Nov. 1901  Tiemi Make   Paeroa.  Translation My admiration, and my feelings of memories of the past in viewing this collection of the portraits of the ancestors and chiefs of the Māori race who have departed to the place of spirits, is very great, they stand before us as if they had returned to this world, to gaze on us the remnant who have survived them. Rest in peace both the males and have preceded us on, in the days which are coming. Rest in peace old chiefs and chieftanesses, we shall be travelling to you but you will not return to us. All we can do is to view your shadows that is all we can possess that is your portraits and your bodies are hidden from us. Alas! Alas! The grief which I feel.

To answer John Anstis'comment - Lindauer painted hundreds of works and this website is limited to those in public collections. Unfortunately these two portraits are not part of the holdings of art museums that have contributed so far.
