    1902 Mei 21  Hapimana mokau  ngāti maniapoto  My friends and I have arrived at this gallery. On seeing my fathers/uncles and my older brother/cousin I was full of affection and grief for them all. What a delight it was to see them as if they were still alive. Secondly, I am very pleased with the Pākehā who painted my elders, salutations to you. And so then, to my fathers I bid farewell to you two and to your son, to Tawhiao, and all the other chiefs of New Zealand who are assembled together here in your abode here in Auckland. 
    Mei 21  Te kei Paehua  Ngatiraukawa   It was the 17th of May, 1902 that I arrived here. I saw my ancestors, Wahanui, Manga Maniapoto, and Tawhiao. They were all assembled in this room. I was full of appreciation and sorrow at seeing them all. It has been quite a long time since their departure from me. I have seen them now and I am filled with gratitude. Greetings my noble elders and to the King of New Zealand. Although you now reside in another place, I greet you all, you whose words were revered, and who were held in high estimation who now rest with the great King Tāwhiao. Remain here with your forefathers and your noble friends assembled here in this house - I greet you all. Secondly I pay homage to the Pākehā who fashioned you in this way to be admired by your future descendants, for ever and ever amen.

    What an awesome view of Lindauer paintings and so far I have viewed 4 of my tupuna in this collection. Thank you very much for allowing me to do this it was a pleasure reading and getting to see where these paintings come from.

    To answer John Anstis'comment - Lindauer painted hundreds of works and this website is limited to those in public collections. Unfortunately these two portraits are not part of the holdings of art museums that have contributed so far.
