1903  Te Pouwharetapu  I Haere mai ahau   I have come from Kawhia to see my elder, Te Kewene Te Haho. I have seen them and my soul is lifted.
    Akuhata
2 " 1902,  Mita Karaka Ngātipare  Raglan  I am absolutely delighted and sincerely grateful for the great work done by the Pākehā in the images of our ancestors who have departed to the other world. They have arrived at their resting place where they will remain forever, that will do. My people, we pay homage to our elders Greetings to our people assembled here in your chiefly abode. Our love for you all is great. This is what we feel when we look at you. However my heart looks forward to the closing day, when we will see each other again. Greetings people. Salutations to you all that remain here. I conclude. From your loving son Mita K Ngatipare 2 August 1902

2.8.02  Ratapu Kewene  Kawhia  I am comforted at seeing my father Te Kewene Te Haho and to you all the chiefs assembled here in your abode. Greetings to you all.
12.8.02  Hone Mima Tiuakauamate  Gisborne (Ngatiporou)   Friends, I am full of praise for these excellent portraits. To my knowledge it is an act of kindness to us from the Pākehā, to take care of things like this so that we will remember our loved ones who have departed from us. Well my elders, E R Aratapu, and H Potae and R Wahawaha. I am a remnant that has been fortunate enough to have seen you all. Salutations to you all.

To answer John Anstis'comment - Lindauer painted hundreds of works and this website is limited to those in public collections. Unfortunately these two portraits are not part of the holdings of art museums that have contributed so far.
