Te Rau Kaimakariri   No Te Akau  My heart has much grief and much affection at seeing you all. Emotion wells up within me. To my elders and sons the integrity of our ancestors, the power, the sacredness, the rank and the authority Greetings to you. It is enough.
9/1/93.  Teroera Tareha  H. B.  On seeing the portraits of those who have departed from me my heart grieves for them. For me, this is my lament for them. My elders, this is the way things are after you. There are railway and tramway tracks running where your feet used to tred. I have seen these things following your departure. These are my words on the occasion of viewing your portraits. This is all T.T. H.B.
12.3.03  Elsdon Best  Ruatahuna. Tuhoeland  These are the portraits of the people from the old days. Their bodies have died, their souls are no longer with us. However, this extraordinary Pākehā has captured the images of the ancestors, as a gift that can be viewed by the generations to come. Persevere Sir! Do not look right nor left. Pursue it to its finality. So that you might preserve the elders who have crossed over to Paerau. Keep it up! This is all. From the man of the woods. Peehi (Elsdon Best)

To answer John Anstis'comment - Lindauer painted hundreds of works and this website is limited to those in public collections. Unfortunately these two portraits are not part of the holdings of art museums that have contributed so far.
